Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros Book Review
I’m going to be talking about Rebecca’s new book called Fourth Wing. I did review this book on my podcast today, so check that episode out here.
Let’s get into the review:
What’s this book about?
Violet Sorrengail wants to be a scribe, but her mom is forcing her to be a dragon rider. You either fly or die if you choose the dragon rider. There are three challenges that Violet has to endure before she can ride a dragon if a dragon chooses her. Each challenge has a high risk of death. Also, you can pass all three challenges and then get scorched by a dragon, so Violet has a lot to overcome. It doesn’t help that she’s physically not capable of riding a dragon, but this doesn’t stop her. Rebecca has a form of chronic illness, so she wrote Violet with a similar chronic illness.
This sci-fi book comes out today, May 2nd, 2023. This book has dragons, enemies to lovers trope, battle scenes, betrayal, and so much more. One of the best sci-fi books I’ve read, and I can’t wait for the second book coming out November 7th, 2023.

Who is Rebecca Yarros?
- Has written 15 novels and majority of them are romance
- Fourth Wing is her first fantasy book
My review:
On Goodreads, I gave it a 5 out of 5. This was a great book. I didn't want to read another sci-fi book, but the dragons, romance, and everyone pinning against Violet had me from the start. Grab this copy, read it, and let me know what you think of it.
What do I like?
1. Dragons
The dragons brought me in, and kept me interested throughout the entire book. The question early on is what dragon will Violet bond with if any. Rebecca provides clues throughout the book on if Violet will be bonded. The cover and the spray edges give a big hint, but that’s all I’ll say.
The history lesson of the dragons when Violet was in class was a great addition to the book. It allowed me to have more information on the different dragons available for riders to bond with.
2. Romance
The romance started early on. You can feel the flirtations right when Violet and Xiaden talk to each other.
The sex scene in this book was roughly 10 pages, which was not bad. One of the longer sex scenes I've read. Majority of authors will write it very quickly, but Rebecca didn't. I loved that.
Also, Rebecca added a note about a pregnancy pill. Only one other author mentions this in her works and this is Colleen Hoover, one of the top selling romance authors in the world. This is an interesting idea to put in a fantasy book, but it does tie the knot on a loop hole. We now know Violet having little Sorrengails is very slim.
3. Violence
There were battle scenes, death, and betrayal. All recipes for a great violence book. This book didn't disappoint in that category.
Rebecca’s view of the battle scene was decent. This is her first fantasy book, so it makes sense. She’ll write better scenes in the next book.
What do I not like?
Nothing. This was a solid book. I loved every part of it.
I can’t express how awesome this book is. One of my favorite books in 2023, and I’m going to listen to the audiobook next.
